Perspectives for graduated students in Biotechnology

The first job after graduation, obtained by biotechnologist, is often localised at an university in the Netherland or elsewhere in Europe. It usually concerns a research project or, more detailed, a PhD project: more than 50 % of the graduated biotechnologist becomes PhD. After some years, about one third will be employed at an university and one half will receive a job in the biotechnological industry within companies like DSM, Intervet and Isotis. As mentioned before, most biotechnologists are researcher; also technical functions are possessed by biotechnologist, for example as a process- or environmental technologist. It is striking, that a considerable amount of biotechnologists, later in their carreer, will get a function as executive.

Skills

An investigation under graduated biotechnologists pointed out what kind of skills a biotechnologists should have when he or she is graduating. It was shown that research skills like 'accomplishing research independently', 'expert knowledge' and 'reporting by letter' were much appreciated by these graduated biotechnologists, in order to function properly. This corresponds greatly to the field in which most of them are involved, namely: research.
